What is Kali Linux?

According to Kali (2020) “Kali Linux is a Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at advanced Penetration Testing and Security Auditing. Kali Linux contains several hundred tools geared towards various information security tasks, such as Penetration Testing, Security research, Computer Forensics, and Reverse Engineering. Kali Linux is developed, funded, and maintained by Offensive Security, a leading information security training company.”

Installation of Kali Linux

•Kali Linux will be the machine we use within VMWARE Workstation Pro-16 , you can use other VM’s to accomplish the same process and following the instructions in the below website to install Kali Linux on your machine.

•The guide at the Kali website is self explanatory and should be relatively simple to setup.

•When Kali Linux is installed it is best practices to update and upgrade your installation of Kali.

•Process to accomplish the above in relation to updating and upgrading kali

•Sudo apt-get install upgrade within a terminal

•Sudo apt-get install update within a terminal

•These two commands should be run on a relatively regular basis (I tend to do this when I install a program on Kali)

•While this may seem like a relatively simple process, it can be easy to forget to update and upgrade.

•Keep in mind when installing programs you usually want to be in the directory you intend it to be in or direct the install to the directory you want it to be in. In later steps, we will need to edit the configuration files of the programs we are installing.
